There's just a few days to go until we're reunited with Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and the rest of her Sherman Oaks pals in Never Have I Ever – and if the previous seasons are anything to go by, we're in for some juicy romantic triangle drama when it comes to round three.

Created by Mindy Kaling, Never Have I Ever's third season is set to pick up with Devi and Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet) right after they've made their relationship official – but that doesn't mean it's plain sailing for the young love birds.

"Have you met Devi? Do you think she's someone who will all of a sudden become reasonable and not create any more messes for herself? I think not," co-creator Lang Fisher told Netflix's TUDUM. "Rest assured, there are some hilarious and fun bumps in the road ahead."

That love triangle could become a love square this season thanks to the arrival of Des – the son of Devi's mother's friend played by Anirudh Pisharody.

"Ben and Paxton should feel worried. Des is the total package," Fisher added. "When he shows up, it's a little hard for Devi to focus her attention on anyone else. I think you can imagine how that might shake up the season."

**SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2**

Season two was a wild ride for Devi, who started off with two boyfriends and an expectation that she'd be moving to India really soon, but actually ended up staying in the US with her grandmother moving in.

In the season finale, she reconciled with Paxton and the two officially became an item as the heartbroken Ben watched on, having realised that he still had feelings for her.

Fans of Ben and Devi needn't give up hope however, with series creator Mindy Kaling hinting in a recent interview that the road to love for Paxton and Devi won't be a smooth one.

"I've watched enough romantic comedies that it's not interesting unless it's constantly shifting and changing," she told Entertainment Weekly. "Having the lead character be happy in love is not super interesting to me. It's more suspenseful when we don't know."

Jaren Lewinson, who plays Ben, added that Ben may start to doubt his new relationship with Aneesa (Megan Suri). "That scene gave me goosebumps because I realised Ben has such an inner conflict that has just surfaced that he's now going to have to deal with.

"You're thinking, OK, he's kind of got this relationship with Aneesa [Megan Suri] going on. And it's like, can he continue putting his heart into that? Or is his heart in a different place? And if it is, can he even do anything about it? How do you navigate that? I'm really excited, fingers crossed, for season three to see that explored.

"It's a situation that we've never seen him in. Both of those girls have some really incredible qualities that Ben's really attracted to, and I think it's going to come down to what is going to make him a better person. Who's going to challenge him in specific ways, and who's going to make him feel seen?"

As for Devi's journey in season 3, co-creator Lang Fisher told TUDUM that a major theme is "self confidence".

"We wanted to show that it doesn't matter if you have everything you've ever wanted on the outside, if you don't believe in yourself on the inside. Devi's greatest hurdle this season — like many teen girls' — is to learn to love herself," she added.

Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan recently told Variety her top hope for a potential third season: "I’d like to see her [Devi] stand up for herself a little more and just speak her mind.

"Not the way that she does already where she’s doing it at the detriment of other people, but just, say how you feel when she’s not feeling OK.

"We got a glimpse of that in season two when she stands up to Paxton and says, 'OK then this is not going to work out. I’m sorry.' That was a really nice beginning to something that could be really great, about her speaking her mind."

Beyond that, the writers will have to chart a future course for Devi and Paxton, after the young couple turned up to their winter dance together, making their romance public to the rest of the school – but will it last?

Never Have I Ever season 3 arrives on Netflix on Friday 12th August. Seasons 1-2 are streaming on Netflix. Looking for something else to watch? Check out our TV Guide to see what's on tonight.
